Elohim Ministry for the Arts

Our Mission

We are located in the heart of the creative arts district in NYC at Union Square West. Our mission is to serve young emerging artists in college at a time when they are forming their creative direction. Professors, who are a part of our group, work in the leading visual art and design universities and are working professional artists.

We provide a Christian arts community in a city that can be an island of isolation. The art students that are mentored in our studios are mostly on their own for the first time. They are competing with one another at a world-class level and trying to find their way in a very unforgiving and competitive environment. They experience stress and loneliness. We try to create an environment that is Christ centered and supportive, yet that challenges the urban cultural pressures that surround them.

Our Ministry

We began in 2003 with one willing art professor and five art students. We now have a studio space that holds weekly bible studies and private art classes that integrate the Christian faith with visual art scholarship. As well, the students are mentored to co-lead the Bible studies and to reach back to the new incoming young artists. We believe that the pursuit of Elohim, the Creator of truth and beauty matters, and that He has the power to heal and renew the mind. We believe that He is the source of the redemptive image and the reason for the creative process.

Student Testimonials

"Throughout the course of my study in university, I have encountered a number of situations that could easily have diminished my faith in God. Being a Christian in New York City is hard enough as it is; however, add to that an overwhelmingly demanding course load, highly competitive peers, and atheistic roommates, and the challenge of living a Christian life becomes even greater. That made meeting my mentor at Elohim ministries even more special to me! Not only was she a devoted professor with an excellence of craft that commands respect, but she was also a strong Christian role model. When we started gathering for bible study, the group became the one thing I most looked forward to at the end of each week. Her spiritual insight is both comforting and convicting; it has kept me grounded in an environment where self-praise is encouraged. I've made lasting friendships with some of the girls in the group. In my walk, nothing has been more rewarding than being a part of this fellowship" - Amy Conte

"I am so privileged to be part of this group and am excited to see where the Lord takes us all. Even more, I really enjoyed meeting everyone. They are so incredibly genuine and hungry for God. I was really impressed and challenged to love God more myself." - Anonymous

"The Bible Study has been a place of refreshment and reality. We engage each other with real issues and real solutions and hope. I've learned things about God and implemented them into my daily life. And have reaped the fruit. It is just beautiful - meeting in an art studio with bread, cheese, and grapes on a Friday night with friends seeking God." - Avery Briggs

"I am really thankful that I have a professor and also a friend like you. You have given me hope. I am definitely a different person since school started" - Anonymous

"I wanted to say thank you again for having me on Friday. It is hard to find people to talk to at my school about God, and my being there has given me a little boost to remind myself that there are people out there that share the same views. I hope to stop by again in the future!" - Matt Schmidt
